STAFF CORRESPONDENT, JAN 21, 2026 — Systematic transport mismanagement and a lack of accountability continue to turn Dhaka’s streets into a hazard for residents. The Road Safety Foundation’s latest analysis shows that 409 crashes in 2025 resulted in 219 deaths and 511 injuries.
The report identifies nine core reasons for the crisis, ranging from the operation of unfit vehicles to the "culture of impatience" bred by chronic traffic congestion. Experts at the foundation noted that the mixing of high-speed heavy vehicles with slow-moving rickshaws on the same lanes is a recipe for disaster.
"The tragedy is that nearly half of these victims were simply people trying to cross the street," the report stated, noting that pedestrians represent 47% of the fatalities.
To address the carnage, the RSF recommendations go beyond simple enforcement. They advocate for structural changes, such as route rationalization and the implementation of dedicated lanes, to separate different modes of transport.
The foundation warns that without withdrawing "expired" vehicles and strictly regulating heavy-goods movement, the capital's hotspots like Jatrabari and Airport Road will remain death traps for commuters.
